Metabolism is Important

Why is metabolism so important? And how does metabolic rate affect our bodies? I mean, we know metabolism affects things like body fat and energy levels. But what about the less obvious stuff?
One example I often use, just to show how central the production of energy is when it comes to the proper function of our body's systems, is digestion. Metabolism have something to do with digestion? Metabolism has almost EVERYTHING to do with digestion.
For example, metabolic rate plays a direct role in the speed that food travels through the digestive tract. The higher the metabolic rate, generally the faster food travels through. It also plays a role in the strength of the digestive secretions due to the metabolic rate's effect on a hormone called gastrin. It also has a big impact on not just how fast food travels through, but how long food sits in your stomach.
This makes perfect logical sense of course. When metabolic rate is high, the body is freely using energy at the maximum rate. This only happens when energy is abundantly available. And when energy is abundantly available (the body isn't starved), food can pass through rather quickly. The body takes what it needs and quite literally "dumps" out the rest.
This is why, if you've ever tried to eat less than your body requires to function properly, the amount of stool you passed got increasingly smaller even though you might have been eating the exact same amount of food each day. When I was at my most starved, I was eating about 2,600 calories per day consistently while doing lots of exercise. I did this for a 44-day period. During the first week I was having three bowel movements per day. By the second week, two. By the third it was just one. By the final two weeks during this period I was having just one, small, charcoal-like bowel movement once every three days!
And that's eating the exact same amount of the exact same thing every day! The diet didn't change, but my body certainly did because, considering the four or more hard hours of exercise I was engaged in every day, this calorie intake was about 2,000 calories short of what my body really needed to function normally under these conditions. So my body adjusted to keep from starving to death, and this decrease in metabolic rate left me feeling freezing cold with every last calorie wrung out of the food I was consuming. Yep, whittled down all that food I ate to a few little pellets.
So, first and foremost, constipation is almost always a foolproof sign of a low metabolism, and raising metabolism is almost always a foolproof strategy for getting rid of constipation.
But this is just one small way that metabolism plays a role in how our bodies work. More on the connections between digestion and metabolism to come in a future installment. Constipation is but one digestive malady that owes its existence to a subpar metabolic rate.
Hopefully this was an interesting and obvious example of the importance of metabolism. But before we go any deeper, you need to be able to assess your own metabolic rate. Is it good? Bad? Awful? In the next email we'll go over some very basic assessment tools to help you determine if you need some metabolic work...
Till next time!

Quasi un obeso...
Complimenti, bel regresso!

insomma ero ciccione e nn ero cosi....
